In 2023, Sri Lanka faced one of its most severe economic crises in recent history, leaving hospitals and doctors struggling with shortages of basic medical supplies and medicines. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Sri Lanka Medical Association of North America (SLMANA) Inc. rose to the call of duty to help alleviate this suffering.

Emergency Medical Relief

When we learned that hospitals across the country were running out of essential items, we immediately reached out to the Emergency Treatment Unit of the National Hospital of Sri Lanka, the country’s premier referral center. Our colleagues on the ground gave us direct insight into the dire shortages they were facing, and we acted without delay.

Fundraising and Rapid Response

To support this mission, SLMANA launched a GoFundMe campaign. Thanks to the concern and generosity of our community, we raised over $57,000 within two weeks. These funds were directed immediately toward procuring vital supplies.

• $25,000 worth of in-stock supplies were purchased right away through direct payments to hospital-approved vendors.
• Supplies included nasogastric tubes, urinary catheters, BiPAP respirator masks, defibrillator pads, respirator leak ports, glucose strips, and other urgently needed items.
• These supplies were delivered directly to the Emergency Treatment Unit, and soon after, we were able to extend support to Cardiac Surgery and other units of the hospital.

Ongoing Commitment

Many of us at SLMANA trained in Sri Lanka and our families continue to rely on its healthcare system. The thought of these hospitals struggling without even the most basic medical resources was deeply painful. Yet, with the help of our donors and supporters, we were able to make a real difference. This effort was a powerful reminder of our mission: “Helping one person may not change the world, but it could change the world for one person.”

Looking Ahead

While the crisis in 2023 posed immense challenges, it also brought out the best in our global community. SLMANA remains steadfast in its commitment to support Sri Lanka’s healthcare system working hand-in-hand with hospitals, doctors, and donors to ensure patients receive the care they need.
